The South African Population Research Infrastructure Network (SAPRIN) comprises Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) Nodes. Its primary objective is to enhance health, social, and economic well-being in disadvantaged and rapidly changing populations. SAPRIN also aims to establish connections with other research infrastructures funded by the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), focusing on environmental observation, digital languages, and genetics/genomics research.
The expected outcomes and impacts of the SAPRIN nodes are:
Provide a versatile inter-disciplinary research platform.
Produce ongoing research data for policy development and evaluation.
Produce routinely updated thematic reports on population health and socio-economic wellbeing.
Establish clear links with the national statistical system.
Effectively engage community structures.
Provide a resource for post-graduate research training and ongoing career development.
South Africa is undergoing a profound transformation, striving to provide equal opportunities and prosperity for all its citizens. However, the country faces significant challenges such as high inequality levels (Gini coefficient of 0.66), unemployment (33%), poverty headcount ratio (57%), and intersecting epidemics of HIV/TB and non-communicable diseases. To address these issues, we provide science-based information and advice to guide development-oriented decision-making, investments, and interventions. Our goal is to empower decision-makers with reliable data and evidence-based practices to drive sustainable and inclusive growth in South Africa. Together, let's reimagine health for all in South Africa.
At SAPRIN, we are committed to fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration, driven by our core principles of inclusivity, innovation, capacity building, collaboration, impact, and ethics and integrity. Our value statement encapsulates our dedication to our stakeholders and our mission to advance population research in South Africa. We pledge to:
We embrace diversity and promote an inclusive environment that values and respects the contributions of all stakeholders. We actively seek diverse perspectives and ensure equal opportunities for participation, recognizing that inclusivity leads to better decision-making and outcomes. We recognize the importance of representing and addressing the needs and perspectives of all population groups in South Africa.
We encourage creative thinking, exploration of new ideas, and the adoption of emerging technologies, enabling us to stay at the forefront of population research and meet the evolving needs of our stakeholders. We encourage and support cutting-edge methodologies and data analytics to unlock new insights and drive evidence-based decision making. Through continuous innovation, we empower our stakeholders to navigate the evolving landscape of population dynamics effectively.
We are dedicated to developing the capacity of our stakeholders and the wider population research community. Through training programs, knowledge sharing platforms, and mentorship opportunities, we empower researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to enhance their skills, expertise, and capacity to address population-related challenges effectively.
We foster a culture of collaboration and partnership, recognizing that collective efforts yield greater results. By working together, we leverage the collective expertise and resources to address complex population research challenges, enhance knowledge sharing, and drive impactful solutions. We actively engage with stakeholders across academia, government, civil society, and the private sector, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and knowledge exchange. By building strong networks, we leverage collective expertise and resources to achieve our shared goals.
We are dedicated to generating meaningful impact through our research infrastructure and activities. Our work aims to address pressing societal challenges, inform evidence-based policies, and empower decision-makers and communities. We are driven by a commitment to making a lasting impact on the well-being and development of South Africa and its population. We strive to produce research outcomes that inform evidence-based policies, interventions, and programs that positively transform lives, promote social justice, and contribute to sustainable development goals
We uphold the highest ethical standards and promote integrity in all our endeavours. Our research is conducted with transparency, honesty, and accountability, ensuring the trust and credibility of our stakeholders and the wider community. We are committed to maintaining the confidentiality and privacy of data and upholding the principles of responsible research.
Through these principles, we strive to be a trusted and influential population research infrastructure network, driving positive change, advancing knowledge, and improving the well-being of South Africa's population while contributing to global scientific advancements.
